I mentioned to my friend, Barb, that I had used the Tri-Recs tools by Darlene Zimmerman to make the star points on the Princess quilt. Here is a tutorial for using them.

The tools.

Cut strips of the fabric. I am using 3 1/2″ strips, which will make a 3 1/2″ square unit. The finished size will be 3″.

Trim off one side of the triangle.

Flip the fabric around and start cutting triangles. These are the center part of the unit.

For the contrasting color, align two 3 1/2″ strips, wrong sides together, so that you will have mirror images of the two side pieces.

Continue to flip and cut the side pieces. Notice the tiny little bit that is cut off at the top of the triangle. This helps align the triangles correctly.

Here are the cut pieces.

Align the side piece with the center piece. See how the tiny bit that was cut off lines up with the edge of the background triangle. Sew a 1/4″ seam.

Repeat for the other side.

The finished unit after trimming the dog ears.

To make a star you would need four of these units, four background 3 1/2″ squares and one star fabric 3 1/2″ square.

Hope this was helpful.
